Quick answers
Niagara Falls FAQ
Quick, straight answers to the questions visitors ask us most, from a local who lives by the river.
Where is Niagara Falls?
On the Niagara River between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, on the U.S.–Canada border. The U.S. side is in Niagara Falls, New York, about 20 miles from Buffalo; the Canadian side is in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
Is Niagara Falls a national park?
No. The U.S. side is Niagara Falls State Park, run by New York State. It opened in 1885 and is the oldest state park in the United States. (The area is also a National Heritage Area, a federal partnership designation, but not a national park.)
Do I need a passport to visit Niagara Falls?
Not if you stay on the U.S. side. You only need one to cross into Canada and come back: U.S. citizens can use a passport, passport card, Enhanced Driver's License or NEXUS card. Kids under 16 can use a birth certificate.
Is it free to see Niagara Falls?
Yes. Walking into Niagara Falls State Park is always free, and the park is open 24 hours a day, all year. You pay only for parking and for attractions like the Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds.
Are the falls lit up at night?
Yes, every night of the year, starting around dusk. The colored lights have been running since 1925 and switched to LEDs in 2016. Start times move with the season, from about 4:30 p.m. in early winter to about 8:30 p.m. in early summer.
Are there fireworks at Niagara Falls?
Yes, in season: a free show every night at 10 p.m. from mid-May to mid-October (2026: May 15 – October 12), with bigger shows on July 1 and July 4. They're launched from the Canadian side and burst over the falls, so you can see them from the U.S. side too. Prospect Point is a great spot. Shows can be cancelled for weather.
Is Niagara Falls open in winter? Does it freeze?
The park is open all year. Cave of the Winds runs in winter with shorter hours, but the Maid of the Mist doesn't. The falls never freeze solid. Mist builds up spectacular ice around them, but the water keeps flowing underneath.
Has Niagara Falls ever stopped?
Twice, sort of. In March 1848, an ice jam upstream slowed the falls to a trickle for about 30 hours. And in 1969, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers deliberately turned off the American Falls from June to November to study the rock.
Which side is better, U.S. or Canada?
It depends on what you want. The U.S. side gets you right up close: the rapids, Goat Island, Cave of the Winds and the brink of the American Falls, in a big green state park. The Canadian side has the wide, head-on view of both falls. Many people do both.
Can you walk across to Canada?
Yes, over the Rainbow Bridge, the only local crossing open to walkers. Going into Canada is free. Coming back into the U.S. costs US$1 in quarters (or C$1.25 or contactless), paid on the Canadian side. Bring your passport or another accepted document.
How tall is Niagara Falls?
The Horseshoe Falls drops about 188 feet. The American Falls is about the same from crest to river, but the rocks at its base leave a visible drop of 70–110 feet. Bridal Veil Falls is about 181 feet.
How long do you need at Niagara Falls?
A few hours covers the main viewpoints in the state park. Give it a full day to add the Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds, and a second day for the gorge trails, Lewiston and Old Fort Niagara.
When is the best time to visit?
Summer has everything open, warm weather (highs around 70–80°F) and the falls at full daytime flow, but also the biggest crowds. Fall is our favorite: fewer people, cooler mist, and foliage that usually peaks around the third week of October.
Is the Maid of the Mist open year-round?
No, it's seasonal, usually from late April to early November (2026: April 24 – November 8). The start depends on the ice clearing from Lake Erie.
Can you swim in the Niagara River?
No. There's no swimming anywhere near the falls, and the currents are deadly. New York State Parks only allows swimming in designated, lifeguarded areas, and there are none at Niagara Falls State Park.
Are dogs allowed at Niagara Falls State Park?
Yes, on a leash no longer than 6 feet, and pick up after them. Dogs aren't allowed in buildings or attractions, except service animals.
Where do you park at Niagara Falls, NY?
The state park has paid lots near the falls: Lots 1 and 2 are $10 a day, or $15 on summer weekends. Goat Island's Lot 3 is free Tuesday through Thursday. There are also city lots downtown. Walking in is always free, so parking a little farther out and walking is an easy way to save.
