Town of Niagara
The older town that the city grew out of
A little history
The Town of Niagara is older than the city beside it. It was created on June 1, 1812, under the name Schlosser, and renamed the Town of Niagara on February 14, 1816. Early on it covered a much larger area, and much of its story is about handing land to newer communities. The Town of Pendleton split off in 1827, and the Town of Wheatfield in 1836.
The biggest change came on March 17, 1892, when the villages of Niagara Falls and Suspension Bridge left the town to form the City of Niagara Falls. The city later annexed the Village of LaSalle in 1927 and a northern area along Pine Avenue in 1955, which set the town's present borders. Today the Town of Niagara is a compact community of about 7,900 people next to the city. Its town historian keeps records going back to its founding in 1812, including tax rolls from 1819.
